Blood Glucose Monitor
A blood glucose monitor, also called a Glucometer, is essential for all people with Diabetes. You must check your blood to make sure your Diabetes stays in control. When you are first diagnosed it is recommended by some that we start out testing first thing when we wake up in the morning, before each meal or snack, two hours after the first bite (also known as PP or post prandial) and again before we go to bed. This helps us to learn how different foods affect our blood glucose. Once you learn what you can eat without problem, then you can cut down on the testing. You should test at least once a day, forever, in my opinion.
Glucometers are quite cheap, and you can actually get them free from many of the companies. The expensive part is the test strips. Your kit should also contain lancets, which are the little pokey needles that get the blood on our fingers. Some people also use alcohol swabs before each test, but this can dry out your skin, so be careful to use some lotion after doing your test.
If you have health insurance, you can likely get some test strips paid for through the insurance company, but there are many of us in the USA that do not have health insurance. Lucky for us, there are some big corporations that have decided to offer their own brand of glucometer. The two big ones that I know of are Walmart and Kroger stores. In my town the stores owned by Kroger are called Dillon’s. There is significant savings with their test strips, and I’ve not noticed that they aren’t any less accurate than any other brand. Another plus for these store brand meters is that for these two particular stores, the test strips will work with both store brand meters. In other words, you can buy strips at one store for the meter purchased from the other store. Be sure to check with the pharmacy before you purchase where you are, just to be sure!
If you rather use a name brand meter, be sure to check out my store linked from the top of the page. There are many great glucometers to be found, along with all the other supplies you will need or want.

Many thanks for the excellent information about diabetes care, It was precisely what I was searching for, and really helpful.
Great article, but are you somebody who suffers themselves? Were you diagnosed early as a child? Just curious as your perspective seems unique.
Yes, my husband and myself both have Type 2 Diabetes, and my oldest daughter is borderline. We were all diagnosed in October of 2008. My husband and I both have great control of our A1C’s, but it is a bit more difficult to get a teenager to eat healthy all the time. Lowering our carbohydrates and increasing fat has kept the disease in check for us. It might not work for everyone. Please check with your doctor if you have any health problems and get some professional opinions on what might work best for you. Thanks for visiting my website, and I hope you will return!
